A True Spirit Of Giving In Rocky Mount, NC

Rocky Mount Most Charitable City

Welcome To Rocky Mount, The Most Charitable City In North Carolina

Charitable giving takes on many forms: it might provide more financial stability to those living in poverty, fund more education, or improve the health in the community. And when it comes to charitable giving in North Carolina, Rocky Mount tops the charts.

According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “How America Gives,” Rocky Mount was rated the strongest in giving compared to all of North Carolina’s 14 metropolitan areas. The Chronicle’s analysis of 2012 IRS data indicated that residents in Rocky Mount gave approximately 6 percent of their annual income –  nearly $121.8 million – to charity that year.

“We are thrilled to once again see the data that demonstrates Rocky Mount as one of the most charitable communities in North Carolina,” said Ginny Mohrbutter, executive director of the United Way Tar River Region. “From the United Way’s perspective, this is not surprising to hear since we have the privilege of seeing philanthropy in action every day within our community.”

The average contribution level in the Rocky Mount area was $4,212 – 6 percent of annual income, significantly higher than the state median of $3,654 – 3.63 percent of annual income. By local comparison, the Raleigh-Cary and Durham-Chapel Hill metropolitan areas contributed about 3 percent of annual income.

And it isn’t the first time Rocky Mount topped the giving charts. The last “How America Gives” report (published in 2012) also reported Rocky Mount as one of the most charitable cities in the country.

“We see the generous nature and caring spirit of our local citizens each and every day, and it is very nice to see the continued recognition for our community,” Mohrbutter said.
