Rocky Mount Honored With Several Awards

We always knew Rocky Mount was remarkable. Now, several  awards and recognitions will help us spread the word.

Several departments within the City of Rocky Mount received awards for excellence, and we’d like to congratulate them on their achievements!

Excellence in Finance

The Finance Department continues its track record for outstanding service---for the 26th year in a row, the department earned a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association. This is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting.

This is a significant accomplishment and represents extensive work on behalf of city employees.

Energy Resources Department Honored

The North Carolina Public Power Award of Excellence was given to the Rocky Mount Energy Resources Department. The recognition represented exceptional achievement in several different categories, including:

  • Continuous improvement
  • Workforce development
  • Wholesale power cost
  • Value of public power

In addition to this outstanding honor, the department also earned the Reliable Public Power Provider award from the American Public Power Association. The award is given to departments that provide reliable and safe electric service.

The Rocky Mount Fire Department Earned Class 1 Rating

We’re proud of our firefighters! They received a Class 1 rating, which is the highest rating awarded by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. (You can read more about it in this article in the Rocky Mount Review.)

The department also maintains its International Accreditation status---placing it within the top two-tenths of one percent of all fire departments in the United States.

Rocky Mount Development Services Department Nets Two Awards

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association presented the department with a pair of awards. They are:

The Marvin Collins Small Area Plan Award

This was given in honor of the departments’ work and planning programs regarding the Atlantic-Arlington Corridor Study.

The Great Transformation Award

This award recognizes the departments’ excellence in the retrofitting and reenergizing of the Rocky Mount Mills development.

Parks and Recreation Received a $350,000 Grant

The Parks and Recreation received a $350,000 grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. This will be used for the renovations to Battle Park. Out of 66 applications from across the state, Rocky Mount’s submission was the No. 1 scoring project.

In addition to the Trust Fund grant, the Division of Water Resources of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality recently awarded a $199,873 grant for the Battle Park Renovation Project.

Rocky Mount’s Manufacturing Recognition

GlobalTrade Magazine recently named Rocky Mount as one of the top 20 cities in the country for manufacturers.

Why?

We’re glad you asked.

Rocky Mount is home to great companies such as Pfizer, Cummins Rocky Mount
Engine Plant and Corning, which is a glass manufacturer. In addition, the city has produced more than $6 million worth of exports in 2018.

In addition, over the years the manufacturing industry has grown by 12 percent. It also accounts for more than $42,000 per capita basis in 2018.

“This recognition is a credit to the many manufacturing companies that call Rocky Mount home
and the workforce that supports them,” said Rocky Mount City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney.
“We look forward to our area’s continued success and growth in manufacturing as well as other
industries.”

The article, titled “Made in America: 20 Top U.S. Cities for Manufacturers,” was published Aug. 4, 2020.

The recognition also represented another milestone. Thirty years ago, Rocky Mount’s economy centered on tobacco, textiles and furniture. Since that time, the city has grown, thrived, and diversified its focus. The result is a workforce that is ready for advanced industries such as the sophisticated manufacturing companies that call the city home.

This recent honor will make it much easier for the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce to recruit various industries into the area. On a deeper level, it represents a community that is thriving.

“The insurgence of manufacturers and industry is providing an opening for smaller businesses
and restaurants,” said David Farris, Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. “It shows an improving, healthy, local economy. I feel like we’re in an envious position compared to other areas since we are mentioned as being one of the top 20 manufacturing cities in the country. That’s where we want to be, and that’s where we are determined to stay.”

Throughout recent years, there have been a number of economic developments in Rocky Mount.

Some of the recent projects include:

  • The NC Department of Motor Vehicles relocation
  • Corning’s plant
  • Triangle Tire

These projects will add a total of almost 2,000 job opportunities for the area’s workforce.

“This recognition by the Global Trade Magazine is validation of our strong belief that Rocky
Mount is a great place for new investments or expanding investments by global or local
businesses," said Carolinas Gateway Partnership CEO and President Norris Tolson. "The city has become a “place to be” by industries looking to be in a growth minded environment. Recent
investment activity proves that; current interest for future investments shows continued
promise.”
