Rocky Mount is experiencing a reawakening.

If you need evidence, look no further than the development of Rocky Mount Mills, the moving of the DMV headquarters to Rocky Mount and the revival of the Douglas Block in downtown.

As these dynamic events continue to shape Rocky Mount’s economic growth, it’s an exciting time for those searching for new careers, employment and investment opportunities.

Another indicator of positive Rocky Mount economic development was the success of a July job fair where 20 local companies were on hand to speak with potential employees.

Roughly 500 people attended the fair hosted by the Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department. The event was held at the South Rocky Mount Community Center.

At the event, staff members from the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) were present to answer any questions about resume preparation and job readiness.

What Makes a Strong Resume?

To get your foot in the door, you need the help of a strong, comprehensive resume. How does your resume stand out among the hundreds of others?

Of course, the time-honored advice about good grammar, proper spelling and neat formatting always applies, but here are several other pieces of advice you might find useful.

According to Forbes and the job search site Indeed, if you follow these tips, your resume will stand a greater chance of landing an interview.

  1. Be sure to use terms effectively by making sure they relate to the position to which you’re applying. This means if they are looking for an electrician, don’t write that you’re an electrical technician. Why? Because this doesn’t address the keyword “electrician.” Failure to address this keyword means that your resume may be overlooked.
  2. Don’t list irrelevant experience. If you have something on your resume that is more than 10 years old and is not relevant to the job you’re applying for, you should remove it.
  3. Be sure the resume is simple and clear. Remember that the HR professional in charge of hiring will likely just skim your resume to see if anything stands out. Therefore, use a professional font, use bullet points and make it brief.
  4. Be specific and use data. Hard data is important because potential employers like to see examples of how you were effective in your job. For instance, instead of saying you increased sales, say you increased sales each quarter by 20 percent.
  5. Determine if you may need a different resume for each job.  Sometimes you may need to tailor your CV to address a specific need or criteria depending on the job or potential employer.
