You don’t have to be a weekend warrior or CrossFit champ to take steps to get into shape. Studies show that even just walking can go a long way toward improving your health. According to the Mayo Clinic, by using some of the proper techniques, you can turn your casual stroll into a solid cardiovascular activity that helps you lose weight and live a healthier life.

We’re very fortunate to live in a city with excellent areas for walking. Let’s take a look at some of them.

City Lake

City Lake has become a popular symbol for Rocky Mount, with graphic designs and photographs of its distinctive fountain frequently decorating promotional material. It’s also one of the most popular places for walking in Rocky Mount.

City Lake is also an ideal spot for fishing and wedding pictures. Its amenities include a gazebo, piers and a bridge to the island in the lake.

Did you know these facts about City Lake?

  • It was one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration projects.
  • It is a man-made lake that was started in 1937.
  • The trail around the lake is one-half mile.
  • It underwent a complete beautification overhaul in 1993.

Battle Park

Rocky Mount takes its name from the “rocky mound” at the heart of the falls of the Tar River by Rocky Mount Mills. (Rocky Mount Mills has become the center of exciting development, as you can read about in our previous article.) The area’s first post office was established on the grounds near that area in 1816, and a short hike will take you to the marker commemorating the place.

Battle Park has wonderful trails for biking and hiking. You can go to the gazebo at the top of a rocky outcropping and enjoy a beautiful view of the waterfall and the mills.

Tar River Walking Trail

If you’re looking for a place with scenic views and a wonderful opportunity for a workout, the Tar River Walking Trail is the crown jewel among the biking, walking and hiking paths in Rocky Mount.

This four-mile trail starts at Sunset Park and continues to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park off of Leggett Road. Not only is it a beautiful place to walk, but it takes you by some of the highlights of Rocky Mount, including:

  • The Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences
  • The Veterans Memorial
  • The Rocky Mount Sports Complex and Athletic Stadium
  • Battle Park
  • One of the longest pedestrian wooden walking bridges in the U.S.
  • A raised boardwalk through scenic wetlands

The Rocky Mount Sports Complex

The Rocky Mount Sports Complex has drawn the attention of groups from as far away as Ohio. Teams have traveled from across the country to participate in tournaments hosted in Rocky Mount. But this 143-acre park has more to offer than incredible sports facilities. The sports facility also has a walking trail, a playground area, and batting cages.
