Be Aware and Fight Crime When Shopping

Whether you're purchasing the most popular Christmas toy, buying a Valentine's Day gift for your sweetheart or searching for the perfect surprise for your mother’s birthday, you should always practice good safety measures on any shopping excursion.

The Rocky Mount Police Department offers these crime-fighting tips to help you stay safe when shopping:

  • Malls and large retail stores can be a haven for pickpockets and thieves. Be sure to stay alert and aware of any activity around you.

  • Shop with a friend! Pickpockets are less likely to approach those in groups. Having a shopping buddy is important because he or she can also walk you to your car.

  • Always park in a well-lighted place. If you don’t feel safe walking to your car, call someone who can walk with you.

  • If you need to stop at an ATM to get cash, try to get it from a drive-through instead of using one in a large retail outlet. Never use an ATM that is in a parking lot or street corner. Be aware any time you are withdrawing cash.

  • Avoid parking next to large vehicles, particularly those with tinted windows.

  • Don’t wear expensive jewelry when shopping---you may draw unwanted attention.

  • When possible, pay with a debit card, check or credit card. This way you avoid carrying large amounts of cash and if these items happen to be stolen, you can contact your bank or credit card company and report it to avoid fraudulent charges.

  • The more you carry, the more vulnerable you are. Pickpockets are always on the lookout for folks whose arms are full of shopping bags or groceries.

  • If you carry a purse, use a cross-body purse to ensure it's close to you. If you have a wallet, put it in your front pocket instead of your back.

  • Do your children know what to do if they're separated from you? Be sure they know to contact a security guard or one of the shop employees.
