How Can You Fight Crime in Rocky Mount?

crime scene tape and lower crime rate in rocky mount nc
If you look at the crime rate in Rocky Mount, you'll find there's reason to celebrate—the city is now experiencing the lowest number of part 1 crimes in 39 years. Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Over the past several years, residents and police have joined forces through innovative programs to make the city safer and less dangerous. Community-oriented policing and the Green Dot initiative are two successful examples.

Of course, for this trend to continue, citizens and police must keep working together.

What can I do to prevent crime in my neighborhood?

There are several practical steps you can take to make your community safer. Parents play a major role in these strategies. Following is some important Rocky Mount crime prevention information:

Safety tips for parents

Children are the most vulnerable members of our community. By taking the following steps, parents can help keep their children ---and the neighborhood—safe.

  • Be sure your children ask for permission before they leave the house, and make sure you know when they should be back home.

  • Be sure your child knows your home, work and cell phone number.
  • Set limits—your child should know where they are, and are not allowed to go.
  • Don't let children play in dangerous areas such as abandoned buildings or poorly lit areas.
  • Know your neighbors—are there certain homes you do not want your children to visit? If so, make sure they are aware.
  • Know who your children’s friends are.
  • Before your child visits or spends the night at a friend's house, meet the parents.
  • Teach your son or daughter to "talk out" conflicts instead of fighting or bullying.

Most important, realize that being a parent means setting rules and enforcing them.

Work with your neighbors to improve your community

Neighborhood Watches are a wonderful way to help safeguard your community, but there's much more to it than merely keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. Did you realize that parks can be a part of fighting crime? Or that a recognition ceremony can make a difference in your area?

Take a look at some of these ideas from the National Crime Prevention Council:

  • Do you have parks in your neighborhood? These are a wonderful recreational outlet for youth. If your local park needs improvement, why not form a community group to help maintain it and get students involved?  You’ll not only have a better park, but you’ll instill a sense of ownership and neighborhood pride.
  • Recognition ceremonies go a long way toward encouraging those who have made a difference in your neighborhood. There’s no need for an elaborate presentation or expensive trophy. Something as simple as a potluck picnic, small block party or a framed certificate can make a great difference.
  • When you do have a recognition ceremony, invite your local community newspaper and let them know about the difference you’re making in the community.
  • Know your neighbors, and if you see any unusual activity, contact the police.
  • Going out of town on vacation? Don’t let your house be a target for criminals. Ask someone to pick up your mail or newspapers while you’re away.
  • If you’re out of town, do NOT hide an extra key under the mat or in a "key rock"criminals are already wise to those "hidden" places.
  • Is there adequate lighting in your neighborhood? If the streets are too dark, speak to your local city council representative to see if any improvements can be made.
