Rocky Mount Housing: Public Utilities Earns Recognition

Rocky Mount Public Utilities Awards

Over 31,000 households receive electricity, natural gas, water and sewer services from the City of Rocky Mount. During this year’s Annual Engineering and Operations Technical Conference, Rocky Mount Public Utilities (RMPU) earned two prestigious awards from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for their ability to provide power safely and efficiently to the population.

APPA is a national organization representing more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community- and state-owned electric utilities.

Reliable Public Provider

For the fourth time in a row, APPA has awarded RMPU the Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designation for providing customers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service. RMPU is one of 94 of the nation’s more than 2000 public power utilities to receive this award. That’s great news for Rocky Mount residents!

Brent McKinney, chair of APPA’s RP3 Review Panel, presented the award. This prestigious RP3 designation recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four areas: reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement.

To earn this award, the power provider must demonstrate sound business practices and a commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. RMPU does just that!

McKinney states: “These 94 designees stand out as models of safe, reliable and forward-thinking utility operations.”

As part of the RP3 designation, RMPU also received the diamond level, which indicates they met 100 % of the required criteria. This is the fourth time that RMPU has received the diamond level award. RMPU is one of only two public power utilities in the U.S. to receive the diamond level four times in a row.

“Receiving the RP3 award is truly an honor. Its also a testament to the work and dedication of our employees to provide safe, reliable service to the citizens of Rocky Mount, said Utilities Director Rich Worsinger.

Safety Award of Excellence

At the same conference, RMPU earned the Safety Award of Excellence for 2013. In the category for utilities with 110,000-249,999 hours of annual worker exposure, RMPU brought home third place.  The award was presented by Marlin Bales, chair of the APPA Safety Committee.

In our line of work, safety is the top priority, said Bales. Without safety, we cant serve our customers to the best of our abilities. This award recognizes utilities that have their priorities straight.

More than 285 utilities entered the annual Safety Awards, which is the highest number of entrants in the history of the program.

We are proud of the service we provide to our customers, said Worsinger. But above all else, we are proud of our safety record, and proud that we do everything we can to send our people home to their families each and every night.
