Loft Renovation in Downtown Rocky Mount

Forget the nice two-bedroom house in the suburbs with the white picket fence and the two-car garage. Now, the latest trend is that young professionals aren't headed toward suburbia—they’re going downtown, where urban lofts and renovated apartments are the dwellings of choice. To see the evidence, the American Tobacco Company had great success in renovating historic Durham factories into gorgeous upscale apartments.

Downtown Rocky Mount Embraces Urban Living

Downtown Rocky Mount is also embracing this trend toward urban living through a number of downtown revitalization projects, which include the creation of residential apartments. Some of the advantages of revitalizing downtown areas include:

  • Creating a sense of pride and ownership
  • Stimulating business investment, which can fight unemployment and poverty

A part of Rocky Mount's revitalization included renovating areas in historic downtown buildings so they could be converted to efficient, sophisticated, apartments. If there's any doubt to its success, be aware that most residential spaces have a waiting list.

Why downtown? It's close to several amenities such as churches, the farmer's market, the Imperial Centre and restaurants like the Prime Smokehouse. Downtown living also complements the philosophy of those who believe in supporting small, local, "mom and pop" businesses, which contributes to the local economy. The environmentally conscious can not only shop local, but they can walk to the many amenities instead of drive.

Then, there's that “X factor”: a feeling of being a part of something that is bigger than yourself, knowing that your dining room is a living part of local history. The Rocky Mount Telegram recently featured an article on new residents who were captivated by the promising direction of Rocky Mount's downtown living.

Renovating Historic Buildings to Revitalize Rocky Mount

Take a look at the Douglas Block for example. This area is a historic centerpiece of the African-American culture of the city. Since its renovation, not only have several businesses made the Douglas Block home, but there are also five apartments on the second floor. There are also three apartments in the Burnette Building. While these apartments (which range from 614-928 square feet) are big on preserving the past, they’ve also prepared for 21st Century energy needs by utilizing:

  • Significant increases in wall and roof insulation to help save energy
  • Efficient heating and cooling systems
  • Low flow plumbing to reduce water consumption
  • Insulated windows that reduce heating and cooling costs but still maintain the integrity of the historic single-glazed windows
