Rocky Mount, NC: Fighting Poverty With Local Food Projects


Rocky Mount is now among 26 other communities chosen by the Obama administration toparticipate in the Local Foods, Local Places economic development project. Rocky Mount was one of 316 applicants from 19 states selected. As a part of the federal initiative, Rocky Mount will receive technical support in integrating local food systems into community economic action plans. This means experts will work with Rocky Mount to develop local food projects that increase access to healthy food choices and support the creation of ag-related businesses and jobs.

During his time as pastor of Conetoe Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Joyner found that he was presiding over far too many funerals. In one year alone, 30 congregants under the age of 32 died. “It just started to feel unconscionable that you would see someone 100 pounds overweight on Sunday and not say anything about it. Then they’d die of a heart attack.”
