A Few of the Largest Employers in Rocky Mount

employment-in-rocky-mountRocky Mount has the best of both worlds: not only does it have the Southern hospitality of smaller cities, but its strategic location to the 64/95 corridor makes it an ideal location for businesses and employers. Organizations such as the Carolinas Gateway Partnership are dedicated to economic development in Nash and Edgecombe counties. It touts these benefits to companies throughout the country and the world. 
These large employers regularly contribute to job creation in Rocky Mount and the surrounding areas. They provide resources to fight unemployment and provide job opportunities for Twin County residents.

While this list is not all-inclusive, we wanted to review the profiles of several of the largest employers in the Rocky Mount Metropolitan Statistical Area:

Hospira, a Pfizer company

Do you know how the company got the name Hospira? According to its website, it’s a combination of the word hospital, spirit and inspire. It also takes its roots from “spero,” which is Latin for hope. 

This company is a leading provider of infusion system, including I.V. solutions, innovative smart pumps, and software designed to meet all clinical safety goals. Hospira employs around 2,400 employees, according to information from the Carolinas Gateway Partnership

Nash-Rocky Mount Schools 

Led by Superintendent Dr. Shelton L. Jefferies, Nash-Rocky Mounts Schools has around 2, 275 employees. Nash-Rocky Mount Schools was created with the merger of Nash County Schools and Rocky Mount City Schools in 1992.

Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant

Cummins is a diesel engine manufacturing plant that employs roughly 1,800 employees. The scope of Cummins isn’t limited to Rocky Mount—it’s a worldwide leader with divisions expanding across the globe. You can view some videos about this international company’s history here

Nash UNC Health Care

Nash UNC Health Care began in 1971 and has expanded exponentially through the decades to include a Women’s Center, state-of-the-art Heart Center and one of the few pediatric emergency rooms in the state. It employs around 1,600. 

CenturyLink

CenturyLink helps customers transform businesses through hosting, cloud and IT services. It operates more than 55 data centers throughout North America, Asia and Europe. Century Link employs 1,000 employees in Edgecombe and Nash counties. 

City of Rocky Mount

The city employs around 850 employees, according to 2016 information from the Carolinas Gateway Partnership. The city’s rich history springs from the “rocky mount” that served as the genesis of the area, paving the way for settlers. Today, the city has launched several initiatives to spur downtown development and the city’s lowest number of Part 1 crimes in 39 years.  Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson.
